The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a two-year deal worth $1.1 million per campaign.

Smith is coming off an eight-point campaign with the Carolina Hurricanes, his lone season with the club. A first-round pick in 2007, Smith spent six years with Detroit before moving over to the New York Rangers, where he filled in as a forward at points.

Smith won't produce a ton of points, but he is a decent physical presence that isn't afraid to drop the gloves.
