The New Jersey Devils have signed forward Timo Meier to a massive eight-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $8.8 million.
The first blockbuster deal of draft day has arrived with the New Jersey Devils.
The Devils continued their torrid week of roster building on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with forward Timo Meier on a massive eight-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $8.8 million.
The deal breaks down as follows: $12 million in 2023-24, $11.1 million in 2024-25, $10.75 million in 2025-26, $7.75 million in 2026-27, $7.2 million in each of 2027-28 through 2030-31.
With Meier now under contract, the Devils have taken arguably the top RFA off the market and locked in a truly staggering forward corps in recent weeks thanks to extensions to Jesper Bratt and Eric Haula and the acquisition of Tyler Toffoli.
Meier truly is a cut above, though.
The 26-year-old racked up an amazing 40 goals and 26 assists for 66 points in 78 games last season, chipping in nine goals and 14 points in 21 games with the Devils after coming over from San Jose at the trade deadline, as well.
Meier is a versatile forward with elite offensive capabilities, having been able to put up fantastic numbers on a terrible Sharks team over his career that had few aspirations of contention. With the Devils, Meier will now be a featured weapon in one of the most potent lineups in the entire league, surrounded by the likes of Bratt, Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Ondrej Palat to give him more than enough supporting talent to truly reach his potential.
For the annual price of $8.8 million? That's not bad, no matter how you slice it.
Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has done a phenomenal job this off-season improving a roster that just nearly finished atop the entire Metropolitan Divison. And given that free agency hasn't even begun yet, his work is far from over.
