Eddie Lack’s hilarious new mask features Roberto Luongo, Swedish Chef

Eddie Lack might have the funniest goalie mask in NHL history. On his new mask, Lack features famed Muppet Swedish Chef hanging off of the Hurricanes’ logos, but the best part is a caricature of his good friend, Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo.

There’s an argument to be made that no goaltender in the NHL has quite as much fun as Eddie Lack. The 27-year-old Swedish netminder has made a lot of fans with his wacky antics. From
his dinner with a cardboard cutout of former teammate Ryan Kesler and his
off-season taco tattoo, Lack is usually up to something worth a laugh. Following an off-season trade to the Hurricanes, Lack was in need of a new mask for the upcoming season. And, after giving fans a taste of what was to come, the completed work has been unveiled. It’s even more glorious than one could have expected.
One of the fixtures of Lack’s masks has been Swedish Chef, but the lovable Muppet has always been featured on the back plate. In Carolina, Lack has decided to go all out and put the Swedish Chef front and center on both sides of his new lid.

(Image via DaveArt) On the right panel, Swedish Chef is peeking out from behind a big and bold Hurricanes’ logo, but one Swedish Chef isn’t enough. On the left panel, the Muppet is featured hanging off of the Hurricanes’ alternate flag logo. “Eddie likes food, and especially tacos, so the Swedish Chef has always showed up on the back of his masks,” wrote mask designer David Gunnarsson. “This time the Swedish Chef shows up on the mask itself! Ready to fix some tacos for Eddie.” The real masterpiece, however, is on the back panel. With Swedish Chef gone from the back of Lack’s mask, there was a need for something to replace him. So in the Muppet’s place is a caricature of friend and former Vancouver Canucks teammate
Roberto Luongo. If you look closely, there’s also a bit of promotion for Luongo’s Twitter, as well, as the Florida Panthers netminder’s Twitter handle, @strombone1, is along the outer edge. With how many masks goaltenders have these days and how often the designs change, it’s about time someone went the pure comedy route. When he hits the ice this season, it’ll be hard to argue against Lack’s mask being one of the best in the league. It’s worth noting that this might not even be the best mask Lack has this season. Gunnarsson said he and Lack have more to come, which we can only hope means a taco mask is on its way.
