Edmonton Oilers Join Three NHL Teams That Won 13 Straight in Past Decade

The Edmonton Oilers won their 13th game in a row on Saturday. Only the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils accomplished the feat in the past decade. Here's more about those runs.

Updated: The Edmonton Oilers became the first Canadian team to win 12 regular-season games in a row since the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. And they went one win further on Saturday, setting the longest winning streak among Canadian teams in NHL history.

Getting to 12 wins in a row in the NHL is very difficult, no matter what era it is, with the Oilers' streak becoming just the 19th time it's happened in league history. But a 13-game winning streak is even rarer, only happening three times in the past decade before Edmonton's 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Only one team has come close to equalling the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins' record of 17 wins in a row when the 2016-17 Blue Jackets fell just one win short of tying the mark. 

From Nov. 29, 2016, to Jan. 3, 2017, the Blue Jackets went unbeaten, and their run included going a perfect 14-0-0 that December. 

The run came to an end on Jan. 5 as the Washington Capitals prevented history with a 3-1 victory. The lengthy run of picking up two points played a big role in the Blue Jackets pulling off their first and, to this day, only 50-win season. But when the playoffs came around, they lost in five games to the Penguins in the first round.

While the post-season didn't end how anyone in the organization or fan base wanted, the Panthers' regular season was one to remember. 

Florida won its first Presidents' Trophy that season with a 58-18-6 record for 122 points. They were third in the NHL and trailing the first-place Colorado Avalanche by four points before getting a late-season surge from March 29, 2022, to April 23, 2022. Even after losing in late April, they won 12 of 15 games in the month to finish first overall by three points.

While the Panthers fell to the rivalling Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round of the playoffs, Florida showed it wasn't a team to sleep on anymore in the Atlantic Division. 

What the New Jersey Devils accomplished last season more than likely saved Lindy Ruff's current job.

The first two seasons of Ruff's tenure as New Jersey's coach saw the Devils finish well back of the playoff race. The Devils then started the 2022-23 season with two losses, prompting "Fire Lindy" chants at the Prudential Center. New Jersey turned it around with three straight wins afterward before losing again. 

The breakout began on Oct. 25, 2022. A 3-3-0 start turned into a 16-3-0 record, capped off by a thrilling late third-period road win over the Oilers on Nov. 21, 2022. The Devils went from a young, rebuilding club to a playoff team with a run that was easily one of the more unexpected in recent memory.
