Take a look at which NHL teams have been the best – and worst – at drafting goalies over the past 20 years.
NHL draft picks are often called “magic beans” due to how unpredictable their value can be, and for good reason.
There is no formula for drafting and developing NHL players. You need your amateur scouting staff, player development team and coaches at all levels working towards giving each player their best shot at making it to the NHL. After all the stars align, that player could have a career-ending injury and never play a game at the pro level.
Nowhere is this unpredictability more prevalent than in developing goalies.
Goaltending is usually a make-or-break factor for championship-hopeful teams, so there is a lot of pressure to draft and develop good goaltending to act as the backbone of your team’s Cup window, and yet, few teams actually do a good job at drafting goalies.
Here is a breakdown of each NHL team’s goalie draft record since the 2004-05 lockout. Statistics and draft information are courtesy of hockeydb.com.
