Flames, mascot atone for screw-up by making kids' wildest hockey dreams come true

The Calgary Flames and their mascot Harvey The Hound made a serious error recently, but more than made up for it with a heartwarming gesture to two teams of hockey-loving kids and their families.

In the hockey world, people talk a lot about the value of a solid second effort. And one of the more touching ones in recent memory came courtesy of the Calgary Flames and their mascot, Harvey the Hound.

After mistakenly no-showing a public appearance in Black Diamond, Alta., at a children’s game in December – the kids’ reward for a charity toy drive for the flood-ravaged town of High River, Alta., – Harvey and the Flames atoned with an incredible, day-long make-up gesture that will forever resonate among participants and parents from both cities.

The kids had a blast meeting Flames captain Mark Giordano, star rookie Sean Monahan, head coach Bob Hartley and assistant coach Martin Gelinas before taking the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome to play a game that ended, fittingly, in a tie. But more importantly, they learned it’s OK to screw up so long as you eventually figure out a way to make it right.
