Flyers left-winger James van Riemsdyk named NHL rookie of the month

NEW YORK - Philadelphia Flyers left-winger James van Riemsdyk was named NHL rookie of the month Wednesday.

He had nine points (four goals, five assists) in 12 games last month and led all NHL players with four game-winning goals.

New York Islanders centre John Tavares, New Jersey Devils right-winger Nicklas Bergfors, Atlanta Thrashers left-winger Evander Kane, Buffalo Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers, Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask and Washington Capitals netminder Semyon Varlamov were also considered.

Van Riemsdyk, a 20-year-old native of Middletown, N.J., was selected by the Flyers with the second overall pick in the 2007 entry draft.
