The Philadelphia Flyers placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out the remaining year of his contract.

The Philadelphia Flyers placed the defender on unconditional waivers on Friday for the purpose of buying out his contract, which has one year remaining at a cap hit of $5 million.

The move comes a little over one year after the Flyers traded a second-, third-, and fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft to acquire DeAngelo's rights from the Carolina Hurricanes to sign him to a two-year, $10 million deal.

Once official, DeAngelo will count for $1.667 million against the Flyers' cap for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, according to PuckPedia.

It wasn't exactly a smooth ride for DeAngelo in Philly. The 27-year-old struggled mightily in his own end after being sheltered during his time in Carolina, which drew the ire of his new coach, John Tortorella. DeAngelo's defensive lapses even made him a healthy scratch on a few occasions, landing him in the press box despite leading all Flyers defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 31 assists for 42 points.

With DeAngelo set to be a free agent, it's possible the Hurricanes will attempt to sign him once again, given that the club had a trade to re-acquire DeAngelo lined up prior to the draft before the NHL shot it down due to a CBA stipulation.

Regardless, it appears as if a fresh start is the best course of action for both sides.
