Flyers unveil new ‘golden’ jersey to celebrate 50th anniversary

The Flyers are going gold to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The team unveiled a new alternate jersey featuring gold accents and a new shoulder patch Wednesday.

The Philadelphia Flyers are going gold this coming campaign.

As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Flyers organization, the team will don a special ‘Golden Anniversary’ jersey 12 times this upcoming season. The jersey itself isn’t a big, bold change from the normal white uniform the Flyers wear, but the accents on the jersey have been turned gold to commemorate the momentous season.

Several zones of the jersey will feature the new, gold piping, with the most noticeable being the numbers of the sweater. On both the sleeves and back of the jersey, the numbers on the white uniform will be filled in with gold surrounded by black piping. In addition, the captain’s ‘C’ and alternates’ ‘A’ will be gold, as well as a three-color name bar on the back of the jersey featuring a black base, white lettering and gold borders on each letter. The pants and gloves will also feature some gold.

“We carry a lot of pride in these 50 years,” said Flyers President Paul Holmgren. “This season we’ll look back and honor those triumphant moments in time during special heritage games, but make no mistake – our eyes are set on this current team on the rise.”

In addition to the gold accents, the Flyers announced a new 50th anniversary patch, seen below, that will be worn throughout the campaign. One additional touch is the presence of Est. 1967, an ode to the Flyers’ first season, on the inside of the neckline.

The club will also be paying tribute to their longtime owner, Ed Snider, who passed away this past April. According to the Flyers, Snider both saw and approved the gold-accented jerseys, and Snider will be a part of the uniform when it hits the ice. Snider’s signature, as well as an “Ed Snider ‘A Flyer Forever’” tribute, will be featured on each helmet.

The jerseys will make their debut on Oct. 20 against the Anaheim Ducks as part of the Flyers’ home opener, and be worn for the last time on Feb. 11 against the San Jose Sharks.

The St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings will join the Flyers in celebrating 50 years in the NHL this coming campaign.
