Flyers waive Vaananen, Metropolit, get set for Briere's return

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Flyers waived centre Glen Metropolit and defenceman Ossi Vaananen to clear salary cap space for Danny Briere's impending return.

Briere is expected to return to the Flyers for Friday's game against Montreal. He has missed the last 35 games and played in only nine games this season because of surgery on his abdomen and groin.

The Flyers needed to dump about US$2.5 million in cap space to fit Briere on the roster, and will likely need to make at least one more move.

Both players each made about $1 million.

Metropolit had four goals and 14 points in 55 games and Vaananen had one goal and 10 points in 46 games.
