The first time I ever met Mike Brophy, it was 1985, and the Peterborough Petes were visiting the Sudbury Wolves. 'Broph' was the beat writer for the Peterborough Examiner, and I watched in awe at the authority over which he talked about the Petes, a team and organization he knew inside and out.

Seven years later, we found ourselves working together at The Hockey News, and we quickly morphed from colleagues to friends. Sometimes, we were like an old married couple.

Well, my pretend spouse is in a bind. 'Broph' desperately needs a kidney. The sooner, the better.

I don't need to tell you what a good man 'Broph' is if you already know him. If you don't, trust me on this. He's 67 years old and in otherwise great health, and even though he's facing this head-on with courage, he wants to see his grandkids do grandkid things like go off to university and get married.

If you're so inclined, 'Broph' has A-type blood, meaning potential donors can be found among those with A and O blood. Anyone interested in being screened as a potential donor can go to www.tohlivingkidneydonation.com or call the Ottawa Hospital at (613) 738-8400, ext. 82719.

It would mean the world to a guy who deserves it.

Here's more. Thanks for taking the time:
