Four players were claimed off waivers on a busy Monday in the NHL.
Defensemen Lassi Thomson and John Ludvig, goaltender Ivan Prosvetov and forward A.J. Greer were claimed by the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames, respectively.
Everyone else placed on waivers at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday cleared, but three these players are heading to new clubs while one skater in particular returns to the team he departed just over a week ago.
The Ottawa Senators reclaimed Thomson (drafted 19th overall in 2019) off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. Anaheim initially claimed the 23-year-old off waivers from the Senators on Sunday, Oct. 1. The six-foot, 190-pound defender played two pre-season games for the Ducks and recorded one assist before being waived again on Sunday. If the Senators were the only team who put a claim in for Thomson, they could send him to the AHL without placing him on waivers again, according to PuckPedia.
In 18 career NHL games in parts of two seasons, Thomson has five assists for the Senators. He spent most of last season in AHL Belleville, recording 26 assists and 33 points in 56 games.
The Colorado Avalanche claimed Prosvetov (114th overall in 2018) off waivers from the Arizona Coyotes. The 24-year-old netminder made 35 appearances for AHL Tucson last season, posting a 16-13-4 record with a .900 save percentage and 3.06 goals-against average. He also played seven games in the NHL for Arizona in 2022-23, going 4-3-0 with a 3.98 GAA and .880 SP. He's played 13 career NHL games in total and was Arizona's third-string goalie.
With backup Pavel Francouz beginning the season injured, the Avalanche can try out 6-foot-5 Prosvetov as the current No. 2 and leave 23-year-old Justus Annunen in the AHL.
A.J. Greer is heading to the Flames from the Boston Bruins. The 26-year-old left winger (39th overall in 2015) played a total of 108 games in the NHL across six seasons split between the Avalanche, New Jersey Devils and Bruins. Last season, Greer played 61 games for Boston, putting up five goals and seven assists for 12 points while averaging 9:06 in ice time per game. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound Greer could likely slot in on the fourth line for Calgary. THN's Calgary site has the details.
And in Pittsburgh, Ludvig (69th overall in 2019) joins the franchise from the Florida Panthers. The 23-year-old blueliner from Kamloops, B.C., spent last season in AHL Charlotte, recording 14 assists and 17 points in 54 games with a plus-18 rating. Ludvig also had two assists in seven playoff appearances for the Charlotte Checkers. The 6-foot-1, 214-pound defenseman has yet to play an official game in the NHL, but he did play three pre-season matches for Florida, with three shots and a minus-1 rating. THN's Pittsburgh site has more.
The NHL requires teams to have their opening day rosters set at 5 p.m. ET on Monday.
