Over 4,500 people made their way to the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ont., Wednesday night to see some of the biggest names in hockey participate in the ‘Hockey Night in Brampton’ charity game.

Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Mitch Marner and Max Domi headlined the event as the captains of their respective teams, with ex-stars Chris Chelios, Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf spread out among two star-studded rosters filled with former, current and upcoming talent.

Brampton mayor Patrick Brown announced ahead of puck drop the event raised $14 million for the William Osler Health System as a commitment to building a second hospital in the city. Brown later said it set a Canadian record for most money raised through a single charity game.

Among all the big names of former and current NHL stars was Porter Martone, a winger for the newly relocated Brampton Steelheads and a projected lottery pick in the 2025 NHL draft.

Martone has had a remarkable and busy 2024. He finished second on the Steelheads in regular-season scoring, with 71 points in 60 games, and he had six points in five OHL playoff games. Martone also captained Team Canada to a gold medal victory with 17 points in seven games at the 2024 IIHF U-18 tournament in Finland back in May.

“Yeah, it's been pretty good. Getting good training in, skating a bit, and just kind of laying low and getting ready for training camp to come back,” Martone said. “We should have a strong team (in Brampton), so I think everyone on our team is excited to come back for training camp.”

While the Steelheads look primed for another competitive season after finishing with a 38-22-8 record in 2023-24 and acquiring 2023 second-round pick Carson Rehkopf from the Kitchener Rangers earlier this month, training camp this fall will look a little different.

The OHL’s board of governors formally approved the relocation of the franchise, which previously played out of the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, on June 26. Wednesday night was the first chance the 17-year-old winger got to see his home crowd of Brampton hockey fans in attendance, just 10 minutes down the road from Mississauga.

“It’s pretty cool to be here, and it's a really special event too,” Martone said. “It’s a great cause, and just to see (the arena) full and everyone here, it's pretty cool. Hopefully we get the same crowd this season for Brampton. I'm really excited to be playing in this rink.”

Martone was one of four Steelheads in attendance for Wednesday’s charity game, including 2024 draft picks Stevie Leskovar (MIN) and Ryerson Leenders (BUF), as well as fellow 2025 draft eligible, Jack Ivankovic.

Skating alongside his teammates as well as his hockey heroes, Martone was all smiles throughout the evening.

“It's cool just being able to step on the same ice as those guys, it’s always very special. They’re just like every other person, they’re genuine people and easy to talk to. It's pretty cool sharing this special event with them.”
