The Hockey Hall of Fame has chosen longtime NHL right winger Mike Gartner as its next chair of the board.

Gartner will be appointed to replace the current board chair, Lanny McDonald, at the end of the latter's 10-year term limit in June 2025.

As of October, Gartner will become the chair-elect to help the transition and support the search for a new president and CEO, as Jeff Denomme plans to retire from those roles following the next annual general meeting in the spring of 2025.

"I am thrilled to pass the torch to Mike whose stature as an honored member will bring continuity and strong leadership during this transitional period for the Hockey Hall of Fame," McDonald in a news release. "His experience and perspective in the business of hockey and longtime service on the selection committee will be a tremendous asset to the board."

Gartner, 64, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 after 19 seasons in the NHL. He is one of only eight players in league history to record at least 700 career goals, with 708 in total, thanks to his booming shot and speedy skating.

He amassed 1,335 points in 1,432 career games played between the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Phoenix Coyotes. Gartner also had 43 goals and 93 points in 122 career playoff games.

In the final seasons of his playing career, Gartner served as president of the NHL Players' Association from 1996 until his retirement in 1998. He then represented the NHLPA on the HHOF board of directors from 2006 to 2009 while being the players' association's director of business relations.

From 2009 onward, Gartner has been part of the Hall of Fame's selection committee, including serving as the committee chair for the past three years. He will succeed the 71-year-old McDonald, a Stanley Cup champion who had 1,006 points in 1,111 career NHL games.

"Lanny has been an incredible leader for everyone involved with the Hockey Hall of Fame over the past ten years," Gartner said in the release. "I look forward to continuing his excellent work carrying out the Hall's mission of both honoring individuals who have brought special distinction to the game while preserving and telling the story of hockey’s rich history."

The HHOF's class of 2024 is scheduled to be inducted on Nov. 11. The class features NHL stars Jeremy Roenick, Shea Weber and Pavel Datsyuk, women's hockey stars Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl, longtime NHL GM David Poile and league executive Colin Campbell.
