Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson signed a six-year contract extension, the team announced Monday. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman initially reported the new deal.

The netminder will earn $5.85 million against the cap through the 2030-31 season. The 27-year-old is playing out the final year of his three-year contract worth $766,667 per season, which Thompson signed with the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Capitals acquired Thompson from Vegas in the off-season for two third-round picks. Adin Hill was given the starting role with the Golden Knights, relegating Thompson to backup duties. Thompson requested a trade to prove to another team he deserves to be a starter.

Thompson is now the first-choice goaltender on the first-place team in the NHL.

"We are pleased to sign Logan to a multi-year contract," Capitals GM Chris Patrick said in a news release. "Logan has demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders in the NHL this season and since he joined the League. With his size and exceptional athleticism, we are confident that this signing will enhance one of the most critical positions on our team, especially as he enters the prime years of his career."

Despite not being selected by Team Canada for the 4 Nations Face-Off, Thompson is having a career year. In 26 starts for the Caps, his record is 22-2-3, and he's posted a .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average.

Among goaltenders who have played at least 20 games this campaign, Thompson ranks second in the NHL in goals-against average and save percentage. He sits behind Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck in both categories.

Thompson is also third in the NHL in wins by a netminder, but Hellebuyck leads that category, too. Thompson is two wins away from Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger.

This is Thompson's third full NHL season and fifth campaign with NHL games. In each of his previous years, he has never ended the season with a save percentage lower than .908.

The undrafted goaltender climbed his way up the rankings throughout his hockey career. It started with parts of four seasons with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings.

He then moved to U Sports' Brock University before dabbling in the ECHL and the AHL. He eventually earned a consistent role with Vegas' farm team, the Henderson Silver Knights, playing two seasons with them.

Thompson then became an NHL regular with the Golden Knights, including being a part of the Stanley Cup-winning team in 2023.
