As the off-season approaches, the Anaheim Ducks have Trevor Zegras to re-sign. Although he's expected to stay, it's a question of how long the contract will be.
For the past two seasons, Trevor Zegras has been a cornerstone of the rebuilding Anaheim Ducks. A finalist for the 2022 Calder Memorial Trophy, the young center has dazzled fans with his playmaking skills.
Zegras should be a key piece of the Ducks' long-term plan. However, NHL insider Nick Kypreos recently wondered if that's the case after talking with the 21-year-old's skills coach, Hall-of-Famer Adam Oates, during the Real Kyper & Bourne Podcast last Tuesday.
Acknowledging Zegras' talent, Oates felt there was a time and place for his highlight-reel skills.
“But for me personally there is a difference between Instagram skill and skill,” said Oates. “And he's kinda got both. And I'm trying to get the Instagram out of there.”
Oates said that he doesn't want to stifle Zegras' creativity but prefers that he focus on being a more well-rounded player. He's spoken with the Ducks star about it, and the youngster has responded positively.
Following the interview, however, Kypreos expressed his doubts about Zegras' longevity with the Ducks in his Toronto Star column.
Kypreos seems to be the only insider with that concern. Zegras hasn't surfaced in any media trade chatter this season. Given his skills, marketability and value to the Ducks, he'll likely be part of their future for a long time.
The only immediate concern could be the cost of keeping him in Anaheim. He's completing his entry-level contract and will seek a substantial raise on his next deal. His negotiations with Ducks GM Pat Verbeek could be worth watching this summer.
