It's been a week since Czechia forward Adam Benak set an all-time record at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and fans in North America are still getting to know his name.

On Aug. 6, Benak scored a hat trick and recorded five points in a 7-3 victory over Germany at the annual U-18 international tournament.

With seven points in the first two games of the 2024 tournament, he broke the all-time event record, which was previously held by Magnus Paajarvi (15), who played in the 2008 and 2009 tournaments.

Benak collected eight assists and 10 points in five games at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in his native Czechia. However, the home team had to settle for a silver medal, losing to Canada 3-2 in the final.

This year, skating on Canadian soil at Rogers Place, Benak collected seven assists and 11 points to finish second in scoring behind Sweden's Viktor Klingsell.

After going undefeated through the round robin and advancing to the gold medal game for the second consecutive tournament, Czechia had to settle for silver again, losing 2-1 to Canada in the final on Saturday night.

When asked about breaking the tournament record and if he celebrated, the 17-year-old said the team was happy for him but just interested in resting and staying sharp.

"We are just tired after games, so we want to recover," Benak said. "We are here to win, so we focus on the game."

As a top prospect eligible for the 2025 NHL draft, Benak had 21 points in 10 Hlinka Gretzky Cup games over the past two seasons.

Last season in Czechia's U-20 league, Benak scored 29 points in 29 games with Plzen. He is now shifting his focus to the upcoming USHL season and is committed to skating with the Youngstown Phantoms.

Despite his personal success, Benak is as humble as they come. He's more interested in winning with his teammates than seeking accolades.

"I think they are happy for me," Benak said, "I think everybody wants to win, like, even if it's assists or goals for someone. I think they are great teammates who are happy for me."

Even though the Hlinka Gretzky Cup is not on the same level as the World Junior Championships, Benak is now a part of international hockey history and has two silver medals.

He's currently a first-round candidate for the 2025 NHL draft class, and he'll be a player to watch closely over the next season.
