Carolina Hurricanes netminder Frederik Andersen will be out indefinitely while dealing with a blood clotting issue.
The Carolina Hurricanes announced goaltender Frederik Andersen will be out of action indefinitely due to a blood clotting issue discovered during recent medical testing.
No timeline for Andersen's return has been provided, although the club does expect him to make a full recovery.
Andersen had started six games this season before his absence, compiling a 4-1-0 record with a .894 save percentage.
In a corresponding move, the Hurricanes opted to bring in veteran netminder Jaroslav Halak on a professional tryout offer to serve alongside Antti Raanta. The 38-year-old Halak brings 581 games of NHL experience under his belt, during which he racked up a 295-189-69 record with 53 shutouts and a .915 save percentage.
The Hurricanes also have youngster Pyotr Kochetkov in the organization to fill the void left by Andersen. Kochetkov is currently on loan to the AHL's Syracuse Crunch but was signed to a four-year contract extension with a $2-million average annual value last season that kicked in this year.
Carolina has some salary cap flexibility, with about $2.79 million of projected cap space, according to PuckPedia.
