At a press conference on Wednesday night, IIHF president Luc Tardif has said that there are plans to continue the World Junior Championship in the summer of 2022 in Canada.

Tardif said he hopes to have "a good surprise" for hockey fans in regards to the tournament. The IIHF announced the cancellation on Wednesday after four positive cases were found between USA, Czechia and Russia.

The tournament quickly came into jeopardy after the first two reported cases were confirmed on Team USA on Tuesday. With three games cancelled in a short period of time, the IIHF and Hockey Canada put a stop to the tournament after just three days.

Tardif made it clear he hopes to make the event work at a later date. The plan is for the same players to be made available for the tournament as it falls within the season calendar.

"It's important for the young players there," Tardif said.
