The New York Islanders have finally started to take care of their offseason moves as the calendar nearly flips past August.

After spending the summer being completely inactive on the free agent market, the Islanders announced three important transactions on Monday morning, one of which being the club agreeing to terms with forward Keiffer Bellows on a one-year contract extension worth $1.2 million.

A former first-round pick of the Islanders back in 2016, Bellows has not exactly burst onto the scene during his three partial seasons in the NHL thus far, racking up an underwhelming 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 67 career games while playing a depth role. Bellows logged 45 of those games last season, failing to carve out a significant spot for himself in the Islanders' forward corps thanks to his mere six goals and 19 points that came while averaging a smidge over 11 minutes in nightly ice time.

Still, there is some hope for Bellows to become a decent NHL contributor.

The 24-year-old is still relatively young, has some intriguing tools to work with in the developmental sense, and could also benefit from playing under a more offensively-inclined system now that Barry Trotz will no longer be behind the Islanders' bench.

Bellows never fit into Trotz's defensively-focused system during his short time under his guidance, getting caved in at both ends of the ice last season which led to a vastly diminished role. Perhaps a change could be just what he needs to finally break through at the NHL level.

Bellows will still be a restricted free agent when his contract expires at the end of the coming season.
