Janis Foligno, wife of former NHLer Mike Foligno, dies of cancer

SUDBURY, Ont. - Janis Foligno, the wife of former NHL player Mike Foligno and mother of Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno, has died of cancer at the age of 47.

Janis Foligno died Monday evening, said the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, where Mike Foligno is coach and general manager "Janis was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend, " the team said in a statement.

Born and raised in Sudbury, Janis Foligno came from a hockey family. Her uncle, Eddie Giacomin, was a longtime NHL goaltender.

Mike Foligno, also a Sudbury native, played in the NHL from 1979 to 1994 with Detroit, Buffalo, Toronto and Florida.

Janis Foligno is also survived by Nick's siblings, Cara, Lisa and Marcus, who was recently drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.
