Los Angeles Kings mascot Bailey has been selected the best mascot in the four major sports leagues.

That honor was handed down Monday by the Cartoon Network’s annual Hall of Game awards show. The lovable lion named after the late Ace Bailey won the most awesome mascot award and got to hang out with the likes of Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick and Richard Sherman.

Bailey beat out Benny the Bulls (Chicago Bulls), Raymond (Tampa Bay Rays) and Swoop (Philadelphia Eagles). Each of the four major sports leagues was represented.

Bailey is a six-foot lion who wears Kings jersey No. 72 because that’s the average temperature in Los Angeles. Garnet ‘Ace’ Bailey was the Kings’ director of pro scouting for seven seasons before dying in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

His winning the prestigious award caught a few of us at The Hockey News off guard. In our Ultimate Book of Hockey Lists from 2008, Bailey didn't make our top 10 NHL mascots. Not surprised was THN web editor Rory Boylen. In January, Boylen identified Bailey as one of the top young mascots in the business, ranking him sixth on his personal top 10 list.

Here’s a video from the Cartoon Network’s awards show. The best mascot announcement and presentation is at the 8:30 mark. Kings’ winger Justin Williams was also at the ceremony and got to introduce Fall Out Boy. That’s at the 15:25 mark.
