The Tampa Bay Lightning have locked in their big swing from this past trade deadline, agreeing to terms with forward Tanner Jeannot on a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $2.665 million.
The deal ties Jeannot to Tampa Bay through the 2024-25 season and also ensures that he will become a UFA upon expiry, meaning that he can sign with any of the NHL's 32 teams.
It wasn't exactly a banner year for Jeannot in 2022-23. After breaking onto the scene with a 24-goal rookie season the year prior, Jeannot finished his sophomore campaign with just six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 76 games, watching his average nightly ice time plummet in the process.
The most notable aspect of Jeannot's most recent season is, frankly, the price he was traded for. The Lightning opened plenty of eyes when they acquired Jeannot at the deadline, sending a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 draft, and a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick in 2023, along with defenseman Cal Foote, to the Predators.
Jeannot continued to struggle in Tampa throughout the remainder of the year, racking up just four points in 20 games with his new club while his ice time dipped below 12 minutes per night.
Still, the 26-year-old has shown flashes of offensive potential at the NHL level and is undoubtedly a big body who can set a physical tone. Perhaps the security of a new contract and a full season in Tampa will be enough to turn things around.
