Well, that's one way to get heavier.

The Toronto Maple Leafs swung for the fences to add some size to their roster on Saturday, agreeing to terms with forward Ryan Reaves on a three-year contract worth an average annual value of $1.3 million.

The deal ties Reaves to Toronto through the 2026-27 season when the hulking winger will be 39 years old.

Reaves certainly brings a very specific type of value to any team he suits up for -- that being the ability to grind opponents into dust. Reaves is one of the last remaining pure enforcers in the NHL these days, logging seven fights last season according to HockeyFights.com and 156 hits, along with five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 61 games.

Offensively, though, Reaves is not exactly a dynamo. The 36-year-old arrives in Toronto with career highs of nine goals and 20 points, both of which he set five seasons ago. And given how the Maple Leafs scored two goals or fewer per game throughout their second-round playoff defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers, one can wonder if this money and term could have been better spent on offensive reinforcements.

Nonetheless, Reaves will be a positive locker room addition and a fan favorite in Toronto thanks to his competitiveness and endearing personality. Only time will tell whether or not he can live up to his new price tag.
