Matty Beniers Wins 2022-23 Calder Trophy

Seattle Kraken forward Matty Beniers has won the 2022-23 Calder Trophy.

An NHL award is heading to Seattle.

Seattle Kraken forward Matty Beniers has been named the winner of the 2022-23 Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's most outstanding rookie.

Buffalo's Owen Power and Edmonton's Stuart Skinner finished as runners-up for the hardware.

Beniers certainly made a compelling case for his candidacy.

The flashy forward spent his first full NHL campaign helping lead the Seattle Kraken to a playoff appearance in just their second season of existence. In 80 games in 2022-23, Beniers racked up an impressive 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points while averaging a little over 17 minutes in nightly ice time. The 20-year-old hit the ground running immediately upon reaching the NHL and should be one of the league's brightest young stars for years to come.

As the first draft pick in Kraken franchise history, there are certainly worse ways to kick off one's career than taking home rookie of the year. Needless to say, this will likely not be Beniers' last appearance at an NHL award show.
