The New Jersey Devils' ongoing search for a starting goaltender is making them the subject of ongoing attention in the NHL rumor mill.

Most of the recent speculation is based on their attempt to acquire Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. On Feb. 13, The Hockey News Calgary's Steve Macfarlane noted there was a report claiming Markstrom, 34, had agreed to waive his no-movement clause to join the Devils.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun subsequently said the trade discussions between the two clubs never reached the stage where Markstrom was asked to waive his NMC. Nevertheless, he later indicated the Devils hadn't given up on trying to make a deal work.

The Devils could face some competition for Markstrom. Adam Proteau recently speculated whether the Carolina Hurricanes or Toronto Maple Leafs could look into the Flames' starter, who is signed through 2025-26 with an average annual value of $6 million plus a full no-movement clause, per PuckPedia.

Meanwhile, the Devils are believed to be kicking tires on other goaltending options.

LeBrun linked them to Anaheim's John Gibson, Montreal's Jake Allen and Nashville's Juuse Saros. ESPN's Kevin Weekes claimed they'd looked into Elvis Merzlikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Saros is the one the Devils seem most drawn to besides Markstrom. They got a good look at him during their 4-2 victory over the Predators, in which Saros stopped 43 of 46 shots.

On Feb. 14, NJ.com's Ryan Novozinsky reported Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald had spoken to Predators GM Barry Trotz about the 28-year-old netminder, something Trotz confirmed during an interview with Nashville's 102.5 The Game.

Trotz insisted it would take a major offer to tempt him into moving Saros. Novozinsky suggested it could cost the Devils a young forward such as Dawson Mercer or Alexander Holtz, a first-round pick, and top prospect Seamus Casey.
