The hockey world was pretty much universal in its opinion that the Philadelphia Flyers were once again going to suck wind in 2023-24.

The fact it is February and they’re in firm possession of a playoff spot is a testament to the job everyone in that organization has done, starting first and foremost with coach John Tortorella, who almost seems to hate losing more than he likes winning.

But what about their future? What if they fall out of a playoff spot? Well, it doesn’t mean this season was all for naught. Far from it. By playing meaningful games down the stretch, the organization’s young players will be exposed to the kind of pressure that kids playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks can only dream about. And if the bonus does happen and they do make the playoffs, the Flyers’ youngsters will be even better off with the lessons they’ll learn, even with an early exit.

The Flyers have enough futures in the form of draft picks and prospects. What they’re gaining right now will be invaluable.
