During his press conference on Wednesday, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas said his club's performance over the next two weeks would determine if he becomes a seller by the March 8 trade deadline.

If that sounds familiar, it's because he said pretty much the same thing coming out of the all-star break earlier this month.

The Hockey News' Nick Horwat cited Dubas saying he's getting more calls from rival generals as his club struggles to remain in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. Nicholas Brlansky cited TSN's Pierre LeBrun recently reporting the Penguins GM was willing to listen to offers on nearly everyone except his core players.

Long-time stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are the core, but Brlansky suggested that Erik Karlsson, Bryan Rust and Marcus Pettersson also fall into that core category. So would Jake Guentzel if his eligibility for UFA status on July 1 wasn't creating uncertainty over his future in Pittsburgh. Horwat noted that Dubas left the door open for moving the 29-year-old winger by the deadline.

If Dubas peddles some of his players, he will seek young assets. He'll want returns that help his club right away as well as down the road.

Sportsnet's Jeff Marek echoed colleague Elliotte Friedman's recent speculation of two draft picks (including a first-rounder) and a good young player as the potential asking price for Guentzel. Jacob Punturi suggested the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings as possible destinations.

Off-season acquisition Reilly Smith could also become a trade candidate. The Athletic's Jesse Granger suggested a reunion with the Vegas Golden Knights, while Friedman wondered about a return to the Florida Panthers. Friedman also let his imagination run wild by pondering a possible reunion for Karlsson with the Ottawa Senators and former captain-turned-assistant coach Daniel Alfredsson.

Rickard Rakell could be another trade candidate. He had 28 goals and 60 points last season, but the 30-year-old winger has just five goals and 21 points this season.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now's Dan Kingerski pointed out that the Penguins have 13 players with no movement or no-trade clauses. Those clauses make it more difficult for Dubas to move out some of his veterans by the deadline.
