Jimmy Vesey's return to the Big Apple will officially last a little bit longer.
The New York Rangers kept Vesey in town for the foreseeable future on Wednesday morning, agreeing to terms with Vesey on a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $800,000.
The deal, which ties Vesey to New York through the 2023-24 season, is a one-way contract.
New York sure seems to be where Vesey feels most comfortable.
The former collegiate star infamously signed with the Rangers as a college free agent back in 2016 to much fanfare and proceeded to spend the most successful years of his career there, racking up 27, 28, and 35 points for the Blueshirts over his first three seasons, respectively.
It wasn't until Vesey departed to Buffalo in free agency in 2019 that his career began to take a downturn. Vesey never seemed to put it together anywhere outside of New York, bouncing around between the Sabres, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Devils over the next three seasons before eventually accepting an invite to Rangers training camp this fall.
From there, Vesey wasted little time in establishing himself as a Rangers mainstay once again, earning a roster spot and NHL deal by the time camp was over, and, after a successful first half of the season, the new two-year extension he signed today.
Vesey has simply been the serviceable depth forward the Rangers have needed in his second stint with the club. In 38 games this season, Vesey has racked up six goals and six assists for 12 points in a fourth-line role, averaging a decent 13:38 in nightly ice time while beginning the majority of his shifts in the defensive zone.
It's always nice to see a player save their career from an endless slump. Vesey has certainly done that and will hope to earn his keep moving forward.
