Detroit's search for a new coach is now underway.

The team has announced that it will not renew the contract of coach Jeff Blashill for 2022-23. Assistant coach Doug Houda and goalie coach Jeff Salajko will also not return.

Blashill had a seven-year run as bench boss, making the playoffs just once back in his first season in 2015-16. The Red Wings have spent most of Blashill's tenure with the team rebuilding, and the club finally returned to the 30-win club with a 32-40-10 record to finish fifth in the Atlantic.

With a young core, the team needed a fresh voice, and Blashill wasn't getting it done anymore. Blashill will serve as USA's assistant coach at the upcoming World Championship after previously holding the head coaching job three separate times.
