A Russian mass attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv destroyed a sports complex that hosted multiple hockey teams, Ukraine's national Olympic committee said Sunday.
The Kharkiv Sports Palace was one of three locations in the city hit by Russian troops during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine said in a post on Facebook.
Search and rescue operations are underway at the site of the explosion, with at least 30 people being wounded in the series of Russian strikes, according to Bloomberg News.
Russia, meanwhile, said it downed 158 Ukrainian drones across more than a dozen regions overnight, including Moscow, per Bloomberg News.
The strikes renewed Ukraine's NOC calling for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be banned from participating in any international competitions of any status.
Before Russia invaded Ukraine, Kharkiv Sports Palace hosted hockey teams such as Kharkiv City (SDYUSSHOR-Misto), U-18 team Druzhba and the women's hockey team the Kharkiv Panthers.
Since the Russian invasion began, eight hockey infrastructure facilities have been destroyed in the Ukrainian nation including the Icehall in Kharkiv, the Saltivskyi Lid ice rink also in Kharkiv, the Ice Palace in Sievierodonetsk, the ice arena Altair in Druzhkivka, the Mariupol Ice Center and the aforementioned Kharkiv Sports Palace among others.
In addition, the ice rink in the city of Melitopol is currently in occupied territory, and the Ice Arena in Kramatorsk is in a frontline zone.
Earlier this year, the Odesa Sports Palace also sustained damage from missile strikes.
