The future is bright in Buffalo.
The Buffalo Sabres kicked off their opening night with a bang on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with defenseman Owen Power on a seven-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $8.35 million.
The deal, which kicks in at the start of the 2024-25 season, ties Power to Buffalo through the 2030-31 campaign and keeps him and fellow first-overall pick Rasmus Dahlin entrenched as key members of the team's core for much of the next decade.
Despite having just 87 games of NHL experience under his belt, Power has blossomed as one of the league's top young defenders, putting together a quality rookie season in 2022-23 by racking up four goals and 31 assists for 35 points in 79 games while logging nearly 24 minutes per night in average ice time. If that weren't enough, Power also earned a spot on the NHL's all-rookie first team and finished third in that year's Calder Trophy voting.
While not overly flashy, Power's incredibly solid and responsible game is the perfect counterpart to Dahlin's more high-octane style, with the 20-year-old demonstrating the poise of a player far more experienced than himself.
After getting Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Dylan Cousins, and Mattias Samuelsson locked up to long-term extensions over the past year, Power was the final piece to the Sabres' future puzzle. With his deal today, the future is quite bright in Upstate New York, as the Sabres look primed to become an Eastern Conference juggernaut in no time.
Correction: The term of Power's seven-year contract originally displayed an incorrect number of years.
