The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Zemgus Girgensons to a one-year contract extension.

The Buffalo Sabres took care of some business ahead of free agent frenzy on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with forward Zemgus Girgensons on a one-year contract extension worth $2.5 million.
The 29-year-old Girgensons was set to hit the open market as a UFA on July 1 prior to this deal, but he is now locked in to remain with the only team he's ever played for throughout his nine NHL seasons.
Girgensons is a depth piece on this up-and-coming Sabres club, having finished last season with 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points in 80 games, all while logging roughly 13 minutes in average nightly ice time.
The veteran forward is remarkably consistent, typically coming in at around 10 goals per season if healthy, and is capable of taking on primarily defensive-focused matchups. In 2022-23, Girgensons began just 41.6 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone, showing just how much Sabres coach Don Granato trusts the Latvian winger in his own end.
After the signing, the Sabres have nearly $14.46 million in cap space with 22 players on their active roster, according to PuckPedia.
With Girgensons now off the market, the Sabres can shift their sights to adding a goaltender to their extremely talented roster.
