The pre-deadline selling spree in the Windy City continues.
The Chicago Blackhawks made yet another move in their scorched-earth teardown on Thursday night, trading forward Max Domi and goaltender Dylan Wells to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick and goaltender Anton Khudobin.
The 28-year-old Domi is in the final year of his current contract, which carries a cap hit of $3 million, and will become a UFA at the end of the season.
Statistically, Domi is having quite the bounce-back season in 2022-23, currently sitting with 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points in 60 games, all while logging upwards of 18 minutes per night in average ice time. Those numbers put Domi on track for his best season since 2018-19, when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens and finished with 72 points in 82 games, including 28 goals.
Take a look closer, however, and Domi's strong box score production isn't all it's cracked up to be, with his possession metrics and efficiency all remaining more or less in line with his totals from past seasons. Has Domi's uptick in production this season resulted from his status as a top option on a bad team? That remains to be seen.
Heading to Dallas now, Domi will likely not log the minutes he did in Chicago, perhaps leading to a drop in production. If his physicality and tenacity remain the same, though, the Stars likely won't mind as they gear up for a heated playoff run.
As for Khudobin, the veteran goaltender has played entirely in the AHL this season for the Texas Stars and has compiled a 13-4-4 record and a .899 save percentage. Khudobin is in the final year of his current contract, which carries a cap hit of $3.33 million.
