The Dallas Stars have signed forward Matt Duchene to a one-year contract worth $3 million.
One of the top names on the free agent market is now off the board.
The Dallas Stars added a big contributor to their forward corps on Saturday, agreeing to terms with forward Matt Duchene on a one-year contract worth $3 million.
The deal comes roughly 24 hours after Duchene was bought out by the Nashville Predators with three years remaining on his deal and gives the Stars some extra punch in an offensive attack that features the likes of Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz.
Arguably the most surprising buyout from Friday’s flurry of action, Duchene remains an effective top-six forward who is just one year removed from a 40-goal season. The 32-year-old racked up a still impressive 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points in 71 games while logging upwards of 18 minutes in average nightly ice time. While Duchene might not be the dynamic borderline star of the past, he still brings a lot to the table in a featured role, topping 20 goals and nearly reaching 60 points in a “down year” on a club that sold off most of its supporting talent at the deadline.
At a cap hit of just $3 million, the Stars improve an area of need while securing arguably the best value signing of the free agency period thus far. Very tidy business from GM of the year Jim Nill.
Stay tuned. More signings are continuing to roll in.
