Alan Letang is the new coach for Team Canada's World Junior Championship team after being an assistant for the past two tournaments.

Team Canada's world juniors team won two gold medals with Alan Letang behind the bench as an assistant. He now gets the head coaching duties for the 2024 tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Hockey Canada announced the coaching staff for the 2024 World Junior Championship on Friday. Letang is the head coach, while the assistant coaches are Gilles Bouchard, Shaun Clouston and Scott Walker. Justin Pogge takes on goaltending consulting duties, while James Emery is the video coach.
Three-time Stanley Cup champion Brent Seabrook joins Team Canada's management group with Peter Anholt, the U-20 lead for the Program of Excellence management group.
Letang, 48, is in his third season of coaching the OHL's Sarnia Sting following parts of two seasons as the head coach of the Owen Sound Attack. Last season, the Sting finished sixth in the OHL with a 41-18-5-4 record and made it to the Western Conference final before losing to the London Knights in six games. Letang also led the Canadian men's U-18 team to gold at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
“We are thrilled to welcome back Alan after a successful year where he helped Canada capture gold medals at the world juniors and Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and to have Peter (Anholt) and Brent (Seabrook)’s extensive management and playing experience leading our National Junior Team,” Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada's senior vice president of hockey operations, said in a statement.
Seabrook, 38, spent last season as a development coach with the WHL's Vancouver Giants. While he is still under contract by the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2023-24 season, he's on long-term injured reserve and hasn't played since 2019-20. Seabrook played 1,114 regular-season games in the NHL, recording 103 goals, 361 assists and 464 points across 15 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. He won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2009-10, 2012-13 and 2014-15, and he won world juniors gold in 2005.
Anholt, 62, has spent the past nine seasons as GM of the Lethbridge Hurricanes following a mid-season replacement in 2014-15. Lethbridge made it to the third round of the WHL playoffs in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Last season, Lethbridge finished ninth in the league standings but lost in four games to the Moose Jaw Warriors in Round 1.
“I am excited to work with this world-class staff as we look to achieve our collective goal of defending gold and winning a World Junior Championship,” Anholt said in a statement. “I know every staff member is grateful for this opportunity and will represent our country with pride in Sweden, and we look forward to assembling a roster that will make Canadians proud as they cheer us on this holiday season.”
Assistants Bouchard, Clouston and Walker each bring head coaching experience to the team. Bouchard is in his first season leading the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL and previously spent five years as the coach-GM of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies between 2013-14 and 2017-18. Clouston's been the coach of the WHL Kamloops Blazers since 2019-20 and added the GM role in 2021-22. He's in his 29th year of coaching. And former 15-year NHL forward Walker coached the Guelph Storm last season and between 2010-11 and 2014-15. He's currently their partner and president of hockey operations.
Hockey Canada also announced the support staff working with Team Canada for the tournament. Kevin Elliott and OHL Owen Sound's Andy Brown are the athletic therapists, while Dr. R.J. MacKenzie from QMJHL Cape Breton is the team physician. OHL Brantford's Chris Cook and QMJHL Saint John's Tyler Jay are the equipment managers. Ottawa 67s's strength and conditioning coach Sean Young takes the same role for Team Canada, while Luke Madill is the mental performance consultant. Mitchell Furlotte is in his first season as manager of hockey operations.
The 2024 world juniors take place in Gothenburg from Dec. 26, 2023, to Jan. 5, 2024. Team Canada is scheduled to have a selection camp in Oakville, Ont., from Dec. 10 to 13.
