In less than two weeks, Team India will be heading to Brampton, Ont., to face off against the Brampton Beast in the international squad’s first game on North American soil. Ahead of the contest, the Ice Hockey Association of India have unveiled the jerseys Team India will wear for the historic matchup. The jersey combines the colors of the Indian flag — blue, white, green and orange — and features a Bengal tiger on the chest. In addition, ‘India’ will appear under the tiger’s head in a unique font, which is also used on the back of the jersey for each player’s name bar. Take a look:

"There are a number of firsts regarding Team India's new jerseys that we are very excited about,” Team India coach Adam Sherlip

said in a release. "First of all, they're going to be worn for the first time ever in Team India's first-ever match in North America. Secondly, the design itself is unique as it incorporates the dark blue of the Ashoka Chakra in the middle of India's flag as a primary jersey color, similar to India's cricket and field hockey teams.” One interesting feature of the jersey might not pop out at first glance, but if you look closely you can see the phrase ‘Chadke’ bleeding through the jersey’s dark blue. The word

will be written in English, Hindi and Punjabi and is a word of encouragement for Team India. The contest between Team India and the Beast was announced earlier this month.

Indian Ice Hockey Association director Akshay Kumar told THN playing against a Canadian team was a great way to grow Indian ice hockey and help build the program so they can compete on the international stage. “For us, this is like coming to the temple of ice hockey,”

Kumar said. “We watch Canada play, we know what it’s all about and what the difference is here. If we can make this an annual event, it will push people a long way in wanting to perform in our country so they can be selected to our national team.” Fans looking to get their hands on the jersey are in luck, too, because Team India will have replica jerseys for sale at the Oct. 9 contest against the Beast.
