The New York Islanders ‘Fisherman’ jersey returns

If you’re a hockey fan of a certain age, you likely remember the New York Islanders wearing jerseys that were derided for looking more like the Gorton’s Fisherman than the logo of a hockey team. Well, love them or loath them, those jerseys are making a return. On Feb. 3, before the Islanders take on the Florida Panthers, the team will don an updated version of the Fisherman jerseys and take the ice. You can get your first look at them below:

As you can see, it’s not much more than taking the infamous logo and slapping it on a blue practice jersey, but it’s still a nice tribute to a piece of Islanders history that some fans would likely rather forget. While some hated the logo, it is memorable from an era when awful logos were a staple of professional sports. The jerseys will be auctioned off, with bidding beginning Friday, Jan. 9 and running through to Tuesday, Jan. 27, with all proceeds going to the Islanders Children’s Foundation. Bringing back the jerseys could be considered a bit of a send off of sorts, as this will be the Islanders final season at Nassau Coliseum. The Isles will play out of the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn 2015-16.
