The Montreal Canadiens kicked off Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday with some news that no one wants to hear, announcing that forward Cole Caufield will miss the remainder of the 2022-23 season due to a shoulder injury on which he will undergo surgery to fix in the coming days. As per the Canadiens' official statement, an update on Caufield's status and recovery timeline will be released once the medical procedures are complete. This is obviously some devastating news to a Habs team that will now be without one of their most dynamic young players for the remainder of the season. Prior to the announcement on Saturday, Caufield had been in the midst of a terrific campaign, having racked up an impressive 26 goals and 36 points in 46 games while logging a tad over 18 minutes in average ice time. The 22-year-old was truly coming into his own in what was his second full NHL season, providing Habs fans with a glimpse at the elite sniper he could one day become. Alas, that future will have to wait a little longer than expected. In addition to Caufield, the Canadiens also placed forward Jonathan Drouin on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 16.
