Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin and Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito were also finalists for the award. However, Nill has emerged as victorious and has joined elite company because of it. This is the second year in a row that Nill's been named the NHL's top GM of the year. The only other GM to win the award in consecutive years is Lou Lamoriello, currently with the New York Islanders. The Stars won the Central Division, finishing the regular season with a 52-21-9 record. Their 113 points were the second-most in NHL history since the franchise relocated to Dallas. They also had a deep playoff run before falling short to the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference final. Nill arguably made the best free-agent signing of the 2023 NHL off-season, signing Matt Duchene to a one-year, $3-million deal. He became one of their most important offensive players, posting 25 goals and 65 points in 80 games. He also made a massive move at the deadline, acquiring Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames. While the Stars did not win the Stanley Cup this year, they were once again one of the NHL's best teams, and they can thank Nill's outstanding GM work for that.
