The days of needing an NHL goaltender to steal you a Stanley Cup are over. You only require a stopper to not lose you games, says Ken Campbell. Igor Shesterkin [https://thehockeynews.com/.image/c_fit,h_600,w_600/MjA2NjM5NjUwNjkxODg0NDc4/usatsi_23353847_168400847_lowres.jpg] Igor Shesterkin At the instant I sent this video to The Hockey News Wednesday evening, New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin let in, well, kind of a stinker in a 3-0 loss to the Florida Panthers. [https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/new-york-rangers/game-day/taking-a-look-at-rangers-embarrassing-game-1-loss-to-panthers] That hasn't been the case much in the playoffs, which puts Shesterkin at the top of the list of the NHL's starting goalies who are still standing, that is, of course, when they're not doing the Reverse VH. Of the four goalies left in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Shesterkin is the most reliable and predictable. And that's all you can really ask for in today's NHL. If you can count on your netminder to make the straightforward stops and rely on them to be consistent, they aren't going to cost you any games. They don't have to play out of this world game in and game out to carry their team to the Stanley Cup, but they certainly can't leave their team with no idea what to expect from them. The Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky has been up and down at times but has been pretty consistent in the playoffs for the past three years, and he's been money this time. Jake Oettinger on the Dallas Stars has had streaks of consistently strong play, although he had stretches of unpredictable play during the season. But the Edmonton Oilers just have not known what to expect from Stuart Skinner this post-season. They had to take goaltending out of the equation to win their series against the Vancouver Canucks, although stopping 14 of 15 shots in Game 6 was certainly more like it, compared to saving just 11 of 15 shots in Game 3.
