According to The Athletic's Rick Dhaliwal, two of hockey's top prospects appear to be likely choices to join Canada in their pursuit of Olympic gold in a few weeks, with Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres and Kent Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets expected to be named to the squad. Both Power and Johnson, who are currently sophomores at the University of Michigan, have earned a place among the top players in the NCAA in 2021. In Power's case, the 19-year-old phenom has been scoring at over a point-per-game pace as a defenseman this season after a solid freshman debut the year prior, ranking fourth in team scoring with 23 points in 20 games. Johnson, on the other hand, sits atop that leaderboard with a team-best 28 points in 19 games, with him and Power giving Michigan perhaps the best forward and defender in the entire NCAA. Power, who was the first-overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, will likely be one of Canada's top defenders at the tournament, too, as his game appeared to be head-and-shoulders above that of his peers at the 2022 World Junior Championships last month when he racked up five points in two games before the tournament was unfortunately canceled. Johnson, who was the fifth-overall pick in 2021 and joined Power on that World Junior squad, added a goal, too. With NHLers not being permitted to participate in the 2022 Winter Games, fans of all nations will likely get a glimpse at some of the best young talent the sport has to offer -- with Power and Johnson leading the way.
