The Washington Capitals traded a second-round pick to the Calgary Flames to get forward and 2021 World Championship MVP Andrew Mangiapane.
The Calgary Flames have traded another veteran, this time to the Washington Capitals.
Forward Andrew Mangiapane is headed to the Capitals in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft, originally belonging to Colorado.
Mangiapane, 28, has one year remaining on his three-year contract worth $5.8 million. The 28-year-old from Toronto recorded 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in 75 games this season. He recorded 40 points in each of the past three seasons, including a career-high 55 points in 2021-22.
Since the Flames selected Mangiapane in the sixth round, 166th overall, in 2015, he's played 417 career regular-season games and has 109 goals and 106 assists for 215 points. He also has 27 games of playoff experience, most recently in 2021-22, with six goals and 12 points in total.
Mangiapane has also represented Canada at the 2021 and 2024 World Championships. He won gold in 2021 and was named tournament MVP with seven goals and four assists for 11 points in seven games.
With the move, the Capitals are about $4.65 million over the salary cap with 21 of 23 roster places filled, according to PuckPedia. NHL teams may go above the cap ceiling by 10 percent in the off-season but must be cap-compliant right before the beginning of the regular season.
Washington still has two second-round picks in 2025, and they have eight picks in the 2024 draft that begins Friday.
Calgary, meanwhile, now has two second-rounders next year, and it has two picks in each of the first four rounds this year. The Flames most recently traded goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils as well for a first-round pick in 2025.
Jacob Stoller called this move a pretty awesome fit for both sides. The Capitals look to remain competitive with a two-way forward who can provide depth scoring after just barely making the playoffs in 2023-24. The Flames are retooling at this stage, so they got what they could to trade Mangiapane without retaining salary. Here's more reaction:
