The coaching departures continue to roll in.

The Washington Capitals became the latest team to open up a vacancy behind their bench, announcing the club has agreed to mutually part ways with coach Peter Laviolette after three seasons.

Hired by the club in 2020, Laviolette ends his tenure in D.C. having earned a 115-78-27 record and two post-season appearances.

The move comes after the Capitals failed to make the playoffs for the first time in nine years, with Laviolette ultimately failing to help the Capitals overcome injury woes to a number of key players on their roster. The Capitals finished sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 35-37-10 record.

"We are grateful for Peter's leadership and dedication to our organization for the last three seasons," said Capitals GM Brian McLellan in a statement on Friday.

"Peter is a first-class individual who has represented our club with integrity and guided our team through many difficult circumstances in his tenure as our head coach. We wish him all the best moving forward."

The Capitals announced that McLellan will speak to the media on Saturday afternoon during the team's season-ending availability, where he will likely provide clarity on the organization's search for a new coach moving forward.
