

For the longest time, it seemed like the most important thing for a potential GM to put on his resume was that he once bled on an NHL sweater. The league is starting to get away from that, which is a good thing.
And the Carolina Hurricanes' hiring of Eric Tulsky as their new GM epitomizes on what the modern-day hockey department puts importance these days.
When you think about it, there's really almost nothing that translates from being an elite player to running a multi-million dollar hockey department, but lots of teams continue to put their trust in guys who played the game.
Tulsky never did that because he was too busy getting his undergraduate degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard and his PhD in chemistry. But he's been around the Hurricanes since they hired him to do analytics in 2014. He can negotiate contracts, he knows the salary cap inside-out, and he can stickhandle his way around the collective bargaining agreement.
