The Minnesota Wild have acquired forward Gustav Nyquist from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft.
The trades keep on coming.
The Minnesota Wild made their second move of the day as evening fell on Tuesday, acquiring forward Gustav Nyquist from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the Boston Bruins' fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft.
Nyquist is in the final year of his current contract at a cap hit of $5.5 million.
The move is somewhat surprising, as Nyquist was announced to miss the remainder of the regular season on Feb. 1 due to a shoulder injury.
The Wild could, of course, place Nyquist on long-term injured reserve through the end of the season until the salary cap no longer applies and then activate him for the playoffs if healthy.
However, the NHL reportedly sent a memo to teams warning them the league will monitor such moves to ensure they do not circumvent the collective bargaining agreement.
In 48 games for the Blue Jackets this season prior to his injury, Nyquist racked up 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points while logging just under 18 minutes in average ice time.
With the Wild having already acquired Marcus Johansson from the Washington Capitals today, GM Bill Guerin is clearly intent on fortifying his club's forward depth heading into the playoffs.
