Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson has surfaced in trade speculation, with the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins being potential fits.
John Gibson has surfaced at times this season in the NHL rumor mill. With the Anaheim Ducks in the middle of a roster rebuild, there's speculation they could shop the 29-year-old goaltender.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman wondered if Gibson might be a good fit with the Ottawa Senators. He noted that Senators GM Pierre Dorion recently talked about trading for a goalie this summer.
Friedman indicated Gibson badly wants a shot at winning, and the Ducks are willing to help him. For the Senators, however, taking on the full $25.6 million remaining over the four years left on his contract could be an issue. Friedman also cited Gibson's health, his willingness to go to Ottawa and what the trade would look like as other factors to consider in such a deal.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could be another destination for Gibson. They might cut ties this summer with Tristan Jarry, who is eligible for UFA status on July 1.
Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggested Gibson as a possible replacement for Jarry. He acknowledged the decline in the Pittsburgh native's stats in recent years but attributed it to playing for the bottom-feeding Ducks. Starkey still considers Gibson a franchise goaltender, pointing out that he's averaging 50 to 60 games with Anaheim.
Starkey proposed the Penguins offer up Jake Guentzel or Bryan Rust for Gibston. However, the rebuilding Ducks could prefer a return that better suits their long-term plans, like a first-round pick, a top prospect or a good young NHL player.
