Who would make sense for the Ducks?
Since long-time captain Ryan Getzlaf retired after the 2021 season, the Anaheim Ducks have been without a captain. For the first time, they went without one last season and the team is now searching for someone to take leadership. The Ducks were the worst team in the league last year but have some renewed hope for the future with their new head coach and young talent on the roster.
But this team needs a leader. They need someone or a few different players to step up and take charge. Ducks insider Eric Stephens of The Athletic gave his thoughts on the situation as they enter the offseason.
"Teams need more than one leader, but the Ducks need to start charting a course back toward contention, and establishing one player who sets the proper tone and can get his teammates to follow him and up Anaheim’s competitive level every night will start the process. Our recent fan survey had Cam Fowler, Troy Terry and Mason McTavish as leading candidates."
Now, Cam Fowler makes some sense. He is a veteran and has been with the team for quite some time now. If they wanted an older player to take charge then Fowler would be the guy! He is a true professional and always shows up on the ice.
But the one player that is intriguing is Mason McTavish. The first round pick of Anaheim from a few seasons ago, McTavish really flourished in his time last season. The 20-year-old scored 17 goals and has 26 assists over 80 games for the Ducks last season.
He is still growing as a player but could emerge as one of the captains for this team. He is a leader by nature and it showed all of last year.
Whatever the Ducks decide to do, they just need a voice to help guide them forward. This is a franchise in the midst of transition so it's crucial that someone steps up sooner rather than later.
