Explaining Coyotes' Pursuit of North Phoenix Land and Upcoming Auction

There has been news over the past couple of days about the Arizona Coyotes’ desire and pursuit of land in north Phoenix in order to build a new arena.

The process in securing this piece of land is not simple and may be a bit confusing, so here is what’s currently going on regarding this specific situation.

On Thursday, the Arizona State Land Department Board of Appeals unanimously approved the $68.5 million appraisal of the 95 acres in north Phoenix.

Now the Arizona State Land Department can sell the land in the form of an auction that will start off at $68.5 million.

The auction won’t take place immediately though. By law this piece of land must be publicly advertised for 10 weeks before an auction will actually take place.

It’s unclear how many bidders there will be for these 95 acres of land, but Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo will certainly be at the top of the list when it comes to potential bidders.

PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reported that an auction is likely to take place around mid June. It will still be some time before all of this gets resolved.

The NHL still seems to have confidence that Meruelo and the Coyotes will be able to get a deal done to keep the team in Arizona.

“I think people are craving certainty,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said recently. “And we are, too, but this isn’t a 60-minute game where the light goes on and the game’s over. He’s (Meruelo) working on it. We still have some time.”
