The Arizona Coyotes pursuit of land in north Phoenix could be their last ditch effort to secure an arena in the Valley.
On Thursday, the Arizona State Land Department Board of Appeals approved the $68.5-million appraisal for a portion of land in north Phoenix.
The land must be advertised for 10 weeks before any auction takes place. It was reported by PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan that the auction is likely to take place around mid June.
Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo is reportedly very committed to securing this piece of land in north Phoenix.
"I've been told multiple times this week, do not underestimate Arizona's ownership's willingness to do this and to prove that it can do this," Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman said.
Despite their intense commitment to win this auction and stay in Arizona, this ownership group is on its last straw and we could see a drastic change with the organization if they ultimately fail to win the auction.

"There was an admission that the status quo cannot continue," Friedman said. "As a result of that, especially if the Coyotes don't win the auction, relocation will be on the table."
The Coyotes planned to build a sports and entertainment district in Tempe before losing a special election vote last May causing them to shift gears.
Ever since then, there have been a multitude of rumors on what is next for the organization, but really not much actual evidence to point in any direction.
This auction is a positive sign for the Coyotes chances at staying in Arizona. One thing is clear though; the organization must succeed.
